Esophageal cancer treatment
There are three treatments for cancer: resection surgery, radiation therapy, and chemotherapy, which are complementary to each other, and combination therapy, which applies two or more treatments without using just one method, is commonly used.
-
Surgical treatment
Surgical treatment is usually performed in patients with preoperative clinical stages 1 and 2 and some patients with stage 3. It is a method to cure the tumor and the structures around the tumor, and the surrounding lymph nodes and mediastinal lymph nodes where the tumor easily metastasizes.
-
Chemotherapy treatment
It is performed to increase the probability of complete resection during surgery by reducing the size and local metastasis of cancer for preoperative patients, and to prevent recurrence, additional postoperative chemotherapy is usually considered for patients with more than two postoperative pathological stages.
-
Radiation therapy
Radiation therapy can be performed if surgery is not possible or if chemotherapy is difficult.
